The fourth and final stop on the 2015 M.W.T. season was in the beautiful village of Port Austin, MI. on July 11th and 12th. This was the second year in a row the M.W.T. concluded its season in Port Austin and once again, we were not disappointed.
On day one, the anglers were greeted with calm seas and sunny skies which turned out to be a blessing as most teams were planning on making long runs back to the west, unlike the year prior where most of the teams fished within 10 miles of the harbor, this year, teams ran as far west as Oscoda in search of the winning catch. Many teams fished the deeper waters north of the Charity Islands, some fishing as deep as 90feet of water, using various methods including crawler harnesses in all colors and deep diving crankbaits.
As teams began to cross the stage on Day 1, it was evident that there were being fish caught all over Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron as many of the teams weighed in the tournament limit of 5 fish. The team of Jeff Snellgrose and Josh Hafner stood atop of the leader board after Day 1 with a 5 fish limit totaling 21.65lbs. Big Fish honors for the day went to the team of Bob Luellen, Todd Spink, and Brandon Stanton with a whopping 7.91lb walleye. Second place big fish was a 5.89lb walleye caught by the team of Mike Wagner and Robert Wilson.
Day two was a carbon copy of day one, with calm seas and sunny skies as the teams departed the Port Austin Harbor. With only 3 pounds separating the top 25 teams going into Day 2, it was going to be an exciting finish. Throughout the day, a crowd began to gather at the weigh-in location in anticipation of the return of the anglers and to find out who would take home the $8000 First Place prize. Once again, teams began crossing the stage with limit after limit, sharing their locations and techniques with the audience. The bite was on and many teams commented it didn’t matter what they used, the walleyes were biting on everything. After the last team crossed the stage, it was the team of Thad McGathy and Chris Pavlichek that climbed to the top with a two day total of 42.58lbs, taking home the Guaranteed $8000 First Place Prize. Second Place went to Day 1 leaders, Jeff Snellgrose and Josh Hafner. Team of the Year honors went to Robert Hoover and Jeff Vantorre. The LUND Bonus for the highest placing LUND team after four events was awarded to Matt and Dan Kirsammer.
